Solar Water Pumps for Farmers: Costs, Subsidy and What PM-KUSUM Offers

By Sheshnath Vishwakarma · 6 September 2026 · 5 min read

In the sugarcane belt around Ramkola, Hata and Tamkuhi Raj, irrigation is a diesel story: haul the pump, buy the diesel, repeat all season. A solar water pump changes that permanently. Sun runs the pump, the diesel bill goes to zero, and the pump outlives several diesel engines.

How a solar pump works

Panels mounted on a simple structure near the tubewell drive a special DC or AC pump through a controller. No batteries needed for irrigation: you pump when the sun shines, which is exactly when fields need water. On a clear day a solar pump runs 6 to 8 hours, and modern controllers start pumping even in lighter morning sun.

What size do you need?

  • 2 HP: small plots, shallow water table, drip or sprinkler setups
  • 3 to 5 HP: the workhorse range for typical holdings in our district, comparable to the common diesel pumps
  • 7.5 to 10 HP: larger farms, deeper borings, or shared use across brothers' fields

The right size depends on your boring depth, water table and crop pattern. Oversizing wastes money; undersizing wastes your patience.

The PM-KUSUM subsidy, briefly

Under the PM-KUSUM scheme (Component B), farmers installing standalone solar pumps get a large government subsidy, with the central and state share together covering roughly 60% of the benchmark cost for eligible pumps, and loan support available for much of the farmer's share. The scheme runs in phases through UPNEDA in Uttar Pradesh, with applications opening in rounds and quotas per district.

Two honest cautions: quotas fill fast when a round opens, and the exact subsidy percentage and eligible pump sizes change between rounds. Check the current round's terms before planning, or ask us and we will tell you what is open right now.

The diesel maths

A 5 HP diesel pump burns roughly a litre of diesel per hour. At 90 to 100 hours of irrigation a month in season, that is ₹8,000 to ₹9,000 monthly on fuel alone, plus oil and repairs. A solar pump's running cost is nearly zero. Even at full unsubsidised price, most farmers recover the cost within a few seasons; with PM-KUSUM support the recovery is far faster.

What to check before buying

  • Pump and controller from an approved manufacturer, with real warranty
  • Structure height and placement, panels must clear crops and dust
  • Boring depth measured, not guessed, before sizing the pump
  • A local installer who will actually come when something needs service

We install and service solar pumps across Kushinagar district and nearby areas, and guide farmers on the current PM-KUSUM round. Talk to us at 88879 60250 or see all our services. For rooftop solar on your home, the PM Surya Ghar subsidy is a separate and equally good deal.
