The subsidy makes solar cheap, but many families still hesitate at the upfront amount. What most people in our area do not know: PM Surya Ghar comes with a dedicated loan scheme, and for a 3 kW system the EMI is often lower than the electricity bill it replaces.
The loan in one paragraph
For rooftop systems up to 3 kW, banks offer collateral-free loans up to ₹2 lakh at a concessional interest rate of around 7%. No property papers, no guarantor for eligible applicants. Most public sector banks participate, including SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank and others, and applications can be routed through the Jan Samarth portal or your bank branch.
The maths for a 3 kW system
- System cost: about ₹1,80,000
- Subsidy (₹78,000 central + ₹30,000 UP state): ₹1,08,000
- Your effective cost: about ₹72,000
- Loan of ₹72,000 at ~7% for 5 years: roughly ₹1,400 to ₹1,500 per month EMI
Now compare: a family whose monthly bill is ₹2,000 replaces that bill with a ₹1,450 EMI, saving money from month one. After 5 years the EMI ends, and the free electricity continues for another 20 years. That is the whole case for financing solar in one calculation.
One important detail about the subsidy and the loan
The subsidy is paid after installation and commissioning, directly to your bank account. Depending on the bank, you may finance the full system cost and use the subsidy to prepay a chunk of the loan when it arrives, which shortens the tenure dramatically. Ask the branch how they structure it before signing.
What you need to qualify
- The electricity connection and application in your name
- Aadhaar and PAN
- Bank account with reasonable history
- Approved PM Surya Ghar application (we handle this part)
Farmers and self-employed applicants without salary slips can still qualify, banks assess land records or business income. Approval is usually easier than a personal loan because the scheme is government-backed.
Our honest advice
If you have the cash, paying upfront is simplest. If you do not, the loan is genuinely good: 7% is roughly half the rate of a normal personal loan, and the asset pays for itself. What we advise against is financing solar on a credit card or a private moneylender, that destroys the economics.
