Here is the question that surprises almost every customer: when the power goes out, a normal solar system switches off too. Yes, even with the sun shining on your panels. This article explains why, and helps you decide honestly whether you need the more expensive alternative.
Why on-grid solar shuts down in a power cut
A standard on-grid system feeds power into your home wiring and the grid together. During an outage, linemen work on those same wires. If your system kept pushing power into the grid, it could electrocute them. So every on-grid inverter has anti-islanding protection: grid goes down, inverter stops, by law and by design. This is not a defect, every on-grid system in the world works this way.
What a hybrid system adds
A hybrid system adds a battery and a smarter inverter. In normal times it works like on-grid solar, with net metering and subsidy. When the grid fails, it disconnects safely and runs your home from the battery and panels. Lights, fans, TV, router and a fridge can run for hours, how long depends on battery size.
The cost difference, honestly
Batteries are the expensive part. A typical home hybrid setup adds roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 over an equivalent on-grid system, depending on battery capacity and chemistry (lithium lasts longer, costs more upfront; tubular lead-acid is cheaper but needs replacement sooner). The PM Surya Ghar subsidy applies to the solar part, not the battery.
How to decide, in three questions
- How bad are your power cuts really? Supply in most of Kushinagar district has improved a lot; many homes see only short, occasional cuts. For short cuts, a small inverter-battery you may already own bridges the gap fine alongside on-grid solar.
- What must keep running? If the answer is a medical device, a shop billing counter, a dairy chiller or a clinic fridge, hybrid is worth every rupee.
- Where does your budget do more work? With a limited budget, a bigger on-grid system usually beats a smaller hybrid one: more generation, more bill savings, full subsidy value.
Our usual recommendation
For most homes: 3 kW on-grid with net metering, and keep your existing inverter-battery for cuts. For shops, clinics, dairies and areas like the eastern belt near the Bihar border where outages run longer: hybrid, sized around what genuinely must stay on, not the whole house.
